Suicide Prevention BASICS by Kathleen Little Leaf
The class begins by explaining there is nothing “basic” about suicide; however, there are a number of things everyone can do and be on the lookout for. This presentation includes a mental health triage guide for offices or breakrooms. Crisis Management, Intervention, and Response procedures will be presented, including: Risk factors, warning signs, risk factor screening questions, mandatory reporting, incident reports, and record keeping. Policies and procedures for creating a suicide assessment action plan will be presented. This approach consists of introducing individuals, families, peers, institutions, communities, and health care organizations to the appropriate educational, prevention, intervention, treatment, maintenance, and recovery aspects associated with crisis intervention and response practices. The training (in general terms) focuses on the necessity of health care professional involvement as the requisite continuum of care in order to reduce risk of recurrence.
One important part of this presentation is what to expect from within oneself if confronted with an active, life-threatening situation. In holistic, Native American style, this class helps both Native and non-Native participants to ground themselves in order to be more available and objective in a crisis.
This class meets the Montana Board of Behavioral Health requirement for 2 CEs per year in suicide prevention for LMFT, LAC, LCSW, and LCPC.
