Incorporating Attachment Theory into Clinical Practice

This class will review the origins of Attachment Theory before diving into the stages of parent-child separation, including Father-Infant relationships. A review of Ainsworth’s Attachment classifications using the Strange Situation Procedure will be included. Dr. Finger will detail infant attachment disorganization and indicators of disorganized attachment, along with measures for older children. Frightened/Frightening parental behavior will be presented, as well as tools for identification of Hostile/Helpless states of mind, pervasive unintegrated states of mind, as well as global devaluation of attachment figure, and other representative indicators of helpless caregivers.

Dr. Finger will also present pregnancy interviews to identify helpless/abdication caregiving stance in pregnancy (i.e. fear of harm to pregnancy and/or fetus). Finally, the class will wrap up with a number of interview techniques and coding techniques to enable a clinician to perform child-parent psychotherapy and parallel parent and child therapy (PPACT). Finally, Dr. Finger will provide information and intervention techniques for children with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD).

While it is not required, it is recommended you take part 1 of Attachment Theory for a theoretical and historical background. (Recordings Available.)
