The overall goal of this training is to train participants how to identify and support suicidal clients. By the end of these sessions:

Session 1: Participants should feel more comfortable with gender-affirming terminology, gain a deeper comprehension, appreciation, and humility for the complexities of the LGBTQIA+ umbrella (Helgeson, 2020),learn how to create an LGBTQ Affirming Clinic, and to identify suicide risks associated with gender identity and being a member of a marginalized community.

Session 2: Participants will have a comprehensive approach to assessing clients’ risk of imminent harm, self-injury, and other self-injurious behaviors. Recommended policies & procedures for utilizing evidence-based questionnaires and Washington state resources are provided. A decision tree is included to assist participants in deciding when and how to screen a client and what resources are necessary based on the screening results. Each participant will receive working knowledge of the long- and short-form of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Participants will also obtain working knowledge of the SOARS

questionnaire to identify non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and other self-injurious behaviors, particularly in adolescents.

Session 3: Participants should comprehend LGBTQ+ veterans’ experience within military culture, effective means restriction, and valuable resources.
